This sample itinerary is offered as a guideline. The trip focus, length and itinerary/activities can be tailored to meet your learning objectives.
Day 1 - Fly to Rome, Guided Walking Tour
Arrive in Rome and transfer by coach to your accommodation located in the centre of Rome. Drop off your luggage, meet your guide and head for a walking tour to explore the most famous and inspiring sights of Rome, such as Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon and Piazza Navona. Together with your fellow students, explore 28 centuries long history of one of the most visited cities in Europe, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Day 2 - Colosseum and Roman Forum
This morning meet your guide in the lobby and head to the walls of the Colosseum, also known as Flavian Amphitheatre - an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. The construction of the Colosseum was finished in 80AD and the elliptical amphitheatre was the largest ever built at the time. Led by your guide, learn how it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. The Colosseum today is a major tourist attraction in Rome with thousands of tourists each year entering to view the interior arena.
Your next visit is to the Roman Forum which is, alongside with the Colosseum, the greatest sign of the splendour of the Roman Empire that can be seen today. The Forum was the centre of political and social activity of Roman citizens. Amongst others, you will see the remains of the Arch of Titus and the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina. As you walk along the Via Sacra, imagine how more than 20 centuries ago Julius Caesar walked there. You will also admire The Palatine Hill, the centre-most of the Seven Hills of Rome and one of the most ancient parts of the city.
After lunch enjoy some free time and make sure to try the world famous Italian gelato (ice-cream), presented here in many different and unusual tastes, such as “English Soup” or basil.
Day 3 - Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St’ Peter’s Basilica, St Peter’s Sqaure
This morning take the metro to Ottaviano Station to explore the Vatican Museums, located in the Vatican City, a city-state surrounded by Rome. Vatican City is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church and home to the Pope. The Vatican Museums house ancient Roman sculptures such as the famed “Laocoön and His Sons” as well as Renaissance frescoes in the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling. The exit from the Museums is right next to St Peter’s Basilica built over the tomb of St Peter. The basilica is the largest Christian church in the world!
After the guided visit inside the Basilica, there is an option to either continue exploring the Vatican City independently or climb up the dome of St Peter’s Basilica for a splendid view of the surroundings including St Peter’s Square and Rome itself.
Tonight, dine out at local restaurant in the city centre and enjoy traditional pasta or pizza.
Day 4 - Free Time, Fly Home
This morning either have some last minute souvenir shopping or visit one of the numerous churches located all around Rome.
Optionally, let us know and we will be more than happy to pre-book your entrances to one of the local museums, such as National Roman Museum - Palazzo Massimo, Galleria Borghese or Capitoline Museums of Rome (not included in your tour price).
Later that day, your coach will pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the airport to catch your flight back home.
They say it is impossible not to fall in love with Rome, so we are pretty sure you will look forward to returning to the Eternal City to explore it further. Ciao!
