- Day
Day 1 - Guided walking tour
Arrive in Rome and transfer by coach to your accommodation located in the centre of Italy’s capital city. There are so many things to do on a classical studies tour of Rome that it’s time to jump in immediately. Meet your guide and embark on a Rome walking tour to explore the most famous and inspiring sights, such as the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, and Piazza Navona. Make sure to try the world-famous Italian gelato whilst wandering through the Roman streets and centuries of history, all within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Finish with a visit to Via del Corso. This main street formed an absolutely straight channel through the labyrinthine alleys of ancient Rome. At approximately 10 metres wide, it was considered a wide street in ancient times. It links the northern entrance gate to the city, the Porta del Popolo and its piazza, the Piazza del Popolo, to the heart of the city at the Piazza Venezia, at the base of the Capitoline Hill. On the north side of Piazza del Popolo, you can visit the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo, which contains artwork by several famous artists. Now Via del Corso is an important shopping street for tourists and locals alike, where you can soak up the city’s incredible atmosphere.
This evening, head to Parco Leonardo Shopping Mall. Here you can dine, then unwind with a game of bowling and a visit to the arcade.
Day 2 - Colosseum and Roman Forum
This morning, meet your guide in the lobby and stroll to the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) - a renowned symbol of Ancient Rome. Led by your TCBC expert guide, discover how the largest elliptical amphitheatre of its era hosted public events such as gladiatorial games. Explore the Colosseum to gain a deeper understanding of its remarkable architecture and hear the venue's gripping tales.
Next, visit the Roman Forum, which, along with the Colosseum, stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Roman Empire. The Forum was the hub of political and social life for Roman citizens. Among the highlights, you'll see the remnants of the Arch of Titus and the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina. Walk along the Via Sacra, where Julius Caesar once trod over 20 centuries ago. Students can explore The Palatine Hill, the central and most ancient of Rome's Seven Hills. Here, they can view the ruins of the Imperial Palaces, the Hut of Romulus, and enjoy the best vistas of the Circus Maximus. Wander through the lovely gardens or admire the colourful frescoes in the House of Augustus.
This evening you can enjoy Rome by night. Take a guided coach tour or walk with our expert TCBC guide to see the sights in a more romantic light.
Day 3 - Ostia Antica, Guided walking tour of Ancient Rome
Today, board the coach to visit the harbour city of Ancient Rome, Ostia Antica. Often preferred by students to Pompeii and Herculaneum, Ostia Antica is now a large archaeological site illustrating Roman urbanism that is not visible within the city of Rome itself. The site is noted for the excellent preservation of its ancient buildings, magnificent frescoes, and impressive mosaics. Students can explore extensive remains of this Roman port town.
Returning to the city proper, use the afternoon for a walking tour of Ancient Rome. See baths, temples, and theatres as you explore with your TCBC guide. Highlights include the Forum Boarium, an Ancient Roman meat market where you can visit the Temple of Hercules Victor and the Temple of Portunus, the Circus Maximus - a chariot racing stadium, the Baths of Caracalla, and the Theatre of Marcellus. Cross the Tiber to the tiny island of Isola Tiberina, linked to the city by Ponte Fabricio, the only original bridge in Rome. Legend says that after the death of the tyrant Tarquinius Superbus, his body was thrown into the Tiber.
Day 4 - Free time, Flight home
Enjoy free time, or optionally, let us know and we will be more than happy to pre-book your entrances to one of the local museums. You could explore Roman mythology at the National Roman Museum - Palazzo Massimo, or the Capitoline Museums of Rome.
Later that day, your coach will pick you up from your accommodation and take you to the airport to catch your flight back home after an incredible Rome educational tour.
