- Day
Day 1 - Fly to Munich, Munich Old Town
Fly to Munich, then transfer to your accommodation in the heart of the city by S-Bahn or coach.
It’s time to learn about German Christmas traditions! At your accommodation you’ll meet your expert TCBC guide who will lead you into Munich Old Town. As you tour the sights, learn about German winter festivals, the customs, and the food that make Munich such an epicentre for Christmas spirit. You’ll journey through Munich Old Town taking in the Old Town Hall, St Peter’s Church and Frauenkirche as well as the Munich Residenz, the former royal palace of the Wittelsbach monarchs of Bavaria. This will be your first glimpse of Munich’s Christmas markets and get you excited for your first visit.
Stop for refreshment at Viktualienmarkt, Munich’s premier food market in the centre of the city. Whether it’s for the energy boost of fresh pretzels and coffee, traditional bratwurst or that festive treat, you’re sure to find something delicious. It’s also home to souvenirs and the finest patisserie.
Suitably energised, it’s off to Munich Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz.
Day 2 - Full day Neuschwanstein visit
What could be more festive than a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle? It’s image made famous by Disney, it combines Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine architecture to create a rarefied and romantic impression. Tour inside King Ludwig II’s famous castle, one of the most-visited castles in the world. Perhaps you’ll get lucky with the weather, Neuschwanstein in the snow is incredible!
On your return, you could add a stop at Linderhof Palace. The smallest of King Ludwig II’s three fairytale castles, this was the only one completed in his lifetime. This rococo style villa was inspired by the Palace of Versailles and designed as a place of retreat where Ludwig could live quietly. Explore the palace and extensive gardens before returning to Munich.
This evening, dine early at your accommodation before having some free time to explore Munich by night.
Alternatively, stay within Munich and use public transport to make the shorter journey to the Olympiapark (Olympic Park). On this site is the stadium designed for the 1972 Summer Olympics, BMW World and of course, a Christmas Market. After touring the incredible stadium and former home of Bayern Munich, you can visit BMW Welt. Here you can see the latest BMW models, MINI and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars as well as visit the BMW Museum Munich to explore 100 years of BMW Group history. Then it’s time for Märchen Bazar (Fairytale bazaar) at Olympiapark. A uniquely themed market, here nostalgic circus tents provide a cosy back drop to clothing, leather goods, fancy jewellery and wooden artworks. The Fairy Tale Bazaar offers an entertaining programme of art, culture and music, action and surprises.
Day 3 - Kunstareal München, Christmas market on Praterinsel or similar, Fly home
This morning, explore Kunstareal München, one of Europe’s most important cultural hubs. Located in the vibrant Maxvorstadt district, visitors will explore outdoor and indoor spaces across 500m2. Kunstareal München covers 5,000 years of cultural history in 18 museums and exhibition halls and 20 galleries.
If time allows, chill out before your flight at the Christmas market in Lehel. Located on Praterinsel (island) it’s an oasis of calm in this fast paced city. Its special atmosphere will give you that perfect Christmas mood for your flight home.
Alternatively, take a stroll through the English Garden and make a quick stop at the Christmas Market at the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower). Did you know that the English Garden is considered to be bigger than Central Park in New York? It's definitely worth a glance!
From here you can transfer to the airport by S-Bahn or coach ready for your flight back to the UK. Enjoy incredible memories from your educational Christmas Market trip to Munich!
