Sample itinerary
This sample itinerary is offered as a guideline. The trip focus, length and itinerary/activities can be tailored to meet your learning objectives.
- Day
Day 1 - Arrive in Berlin, Guided Walking Tour, TV Tower
Fly to Berlin and transfer by coach to your city-centre accommodation. Engage your students' listening skills immediately with a guided walking tour pitched to match your students' understanding. Take in the iconic Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag and cross the former borders between East and West Germany all while consolidating and expanding target vocabulary in topics connected to ‘the local area,’ ‘exploring the town,’ and ‘identity and culture.’
Relax and have your evening meal in your accommodation before heading out to see the city at night. Take your learning of German to new heights by heading up the TV Tower. The 203m tower gives students an incredible vantage point to take in the city beneath.
Day 2 - German lessons and DDR Museum
Begin your German lessons at the language school this morning with a German language course for students. Build your students confidence and expand their knowledge with lessons matched to your goals and students’ capabilities.
Take your lunch break in Potsdamer Platz and give students opportunities to practice their vocabulary in food and drink, eating out, and asking questions.
This afternoon, explore ‘East Germany’ as part of understanding culture and identity in Germany. The DDR Museum is one of the most interactive museums in the world with highlights including an original Trabant, a high-rise tower block flat reconstruction and hundreds of original objects.
This evening, enjoy bowling.
Day 3 - German lessons and the Olympic Stadium
Guten morgen! Another language class this morning continues to expand your students’ language skill. Tackle course content appropriate to your learners perhaps focusing today on hobbies and pastimes, or make the most of being in Berlin and learn about its cultural traditions.
This afternoon, board the coach and take a trip out to visit the Olympic Stadium. Take a tour in German and English. You could choose a ‘highlight tour’ taking in areas not otherwise open to the public including VIP areas, and the changing rooms and warm- up training hall, or a themed tour focusing on history, architecture or sport. This stadium’s history begins with its hosting of the 1936 games in Nazi Germany, allowing students an accessible way into this complex historical period.
This evening visit the Checkpoint Charlie museum. Adjacent to the original border crossing, the museum has a bilingual presentation of the seismic events that took place at this site where the Cold War almost erupted into a hot war and where numerous thrilling escapes were made and prevented.
Day 4 - Berlin Wall Memorial, Fly home
Auf Wiedersehen, tschüss! A final language lesson this morning celebrates the success and progress students have made in their language immersion experience.
From here, head to the Berlin Wall memorial to explore the impact that the division and reunification has had on the city. At Bernauer Strasse students can see the wall in all its defensive and offensive complexity, studying its construction from above in the observation tower. Explore the exhibition presented in both German and English.
Use any remaining time for souvenir shopping in Alexanderplatz before heading to the airport. Fly home with brilliant memories of your German cultural exchange trip.
