Sample itinerary
This sample itinerary is offered as a guideline. The trip focus, length and itinerary/activities can be tailored to meet your learning objectives.
- Day
Day 1 - Travel to Normandy
Begin today with an early start as you make your way to Folkstone or Dover for the crossing into Calais. Depending on your location you may also want to consider crossing with Brittany Ferries directly into Normandy.
Time dependent on this day you may be able to stop for an en-route visit to Rouen, known for its rich Medieval history and whose skyline is dominated by the spires of Cathédrale Notre-Dame.
From here head to your accommodation to check in and dinner.
Day 2 - Falaise and Bayeux
Today we set off and head south of Caen to Falaise, walking in the footsteps of William the Conqueror, one of history’s most influential figures, you will enjoy a guided tour of this authentic medieval site, which has been expertly restored.
Bayeux is one of the few Medieval towns which was not destroyed during WW2, take a stroll through the cobbled streets and enjoy the half-timbered houses and market squares. Standing proudly in the centre you will find Bayeux Cathedral which is a stunning example of Norman Gothic Architecture and was originally consecrated in 1077. (Please note that the Bayeyx Tapestry is closed for renovation for two years from 1st September 25)
It seems fitting that as the first town to liberated on D-Day, Bayeux is home to the largest CWGC Cemetery of the Second World War in France. The Memorial lists over 1,800 names of soldiers with no known grave whilst the cemetery contains over 4,000 burials, including VC recipient Cpl Sidney Bates.
After paying our respects we head back to your accommodation for dinner.
Day 3 - Mont St Michel
Without doubt today features one of the highlights of our tour with a trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mont St Michel. Built atop a rocky island, here you will find over 1,300 years of history. Playing a strategic part in the 100 year war, it remained unconquered due to its natural defences and the Abbey and surrounding village is rich in history and legends.
Our experienced guides will take you on a guided tour of the village and Abbey, after which you will have free time to explore for yourselves.
After leaving Mont St Michel, perhaps make a stop a local goat farm for a hands on memorable experience, meeting the animals and learning how goats cheese is made and of course there will be the opportunity to also taste some of the product. Alternatively, you can enjoy some downtime at a local bowling alley.
Following this visit we will return to your accommodation for dinner
Day 4 - Journey Home
Departing from our accommodation after breakfast and time permitting, we will make an en-route visit to Honfleur. As a picturesque coastal town, experience the charming harbour and historic architecture which inspired famous painters like Claude Monet. Following free time we will continue our journey home.
