- Day
Day 1 - Arrive Lille, Vieux Lille
Arrive in Lille and transfer to your accommodation.
Head out into the city this afternoon to explore the Old Town (Vieux Lille). The first stop on your walking tour is La Grand Place (Place Charles de Gaulle). This main square is the heart of Lille, surrounded by impressive buildings such as the Vieille Bourse (Old Stock Exchange), La Voix du Nord building, and the Théâtre du Nord. A statue of the goddess, La Déesse, stands in the centre. Take in the city's atmosphere, and appreciate the beautiful Flemish architecture. It's also a great spot to learn about Lille's history and its role in French culture. Visit the various cafés and restaurants around the square to practise ordering food and drinks in French. Students can also engage in conversations with locals or fellow tourists, and observe public performances or events often held here.
After dinner, grab some popcorn and head out to watch a French movie. English subtitles are available.
Day 2 - Guided Walking Tour, French Language lessons
Begin at Lille Flandres Train Station with its classical facade and modern interior; it’s a great introduction to the city's blend of historical and 21st-century elements. Continue on to Lille Cathedral (Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille). This modern cathedral, completed in the 1990s, is known for its unique facade that blends Gothic and contemporary styles. Inside, the stained glass windows and artwork are striking. Rihour Palace, The Hospice Comtesse Museum, the Saint Maurice Church, and the Citadel of Lille all help develop students' descriptive language and cultural understanding. Near the Citadel is Lille Zoo. While small, this fun addition to the walking tour allows students to read information panels about the animals in French and helps expand vocabulary related to animals and the natural world.
Hungry from your walking tour, it’s the perfect time to head off to a demonstration by a professional chef. You could learn about the arts of waffle-making, artisan chocolate, or even traditional French fromagerie.
This afternoon, it’s time to visit our selected French language school. Classes are tailored to each student's level and needs, allowing for targeted language practice. Under the watchful eye of native speakers, focus on conversation and vocabulary that you’ll use during your stay, developing your abilities in real-life scenarios.
After class finishes, head out for dinner in town and put your new skills to the test. This evening, enjoy a game of ten-pin bowling in the city.
Day 3 - Birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, French Language Lessons
This morning, it’s time to put all you have learnt together. With your knowledge of the city and your learning from class, embark on a Lille treasure hunt.
Finish your explorations at the Maison Natale de Charles de Gaulle (Birthplace of Charles de Gaulle). The museum is dedicated to the life of Charles de Gaulle, one of France’s most important historical figures, and is located in the house where he was born in Lille. Students can learn about French history and politics by taking a guided tour in French. Reading exhibits and listening to audio guides in French will help improve language comprehension, especially in historical and political contexts.
For lunch today, explore Le Marché de Wazemmes. One of the largest and liveliest markets in Lille, Wazemmes Market is a bustling place full of stalls selling everything from fresh produce to clothing and international foods. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn everyday vocabulary while buying fresh fruits, vegetables, and local specialties, and to immerse themselves in the local culture.
This afternoon, it’s time for the second of your two intensive French classes. Build confidence in your conversation skills, develop new vocabulary, and see how your ear has developed after your cultural immersion in the city.
From here, head into the city for dinner, and put your new vocabulary into practice by ordering food and interacting with restaurant staff. Return to your accommodation for an evening at leisure.
If you prefer to explore further afield, you can exchange today for a day trip to Paris or Bruges.
Day 4 - Palais des Beaux-Arts, Belfry Tower
Check out of the hotel on this final jam-packed day. First up, it’s off to the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille. One of the largest art museums in France, it houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures, and antiquities. Artistic highlights here include works by Rubens, Goya, and Delacroix, while the vast collection allows language students to read descriptions in French and practise describing the images.
Next, move on to the Belfry Tower. Climb 109 steps before taking the lift for a view 104 metres above Lille. From the top of this UNESCO World Heritage site, you'll have panoramic views over Lille, including the Pierre Mauroy stadium, the Lys Valley, and even the Monts de Flandres.
Take one last opportunity to practise conversation as you grab lunch. From here, it’s time to depart after an incredible language immersion in Lille.
