Flanders Remembers

Hollie with Simon Louagie and David Maenaut, General Representative of Flanders in the United Kingdom and Ireland, celebrating the ongoing partnership and shared commitment to remembering the stories and sacrifices of the First World War

On 5th November, our Product Manager Hollie was honoured to attend the Flanders Remembers service at the Royal Military Chapel in London.

The event, organised by the Diplomatic Representation of Flanders in the UK and attended by Deputy Minister Ben Weyts, brought together people and organisations dedicated to remembering those who served during the First World War and all conflicts since.

It was a beautiful and moving evening, with performances from the Band of the Grenadier Guards and vocal ensemble Colibrio from Poperinge. The service closed with a Last Post ceremony at the Flanders Fields Memorial Garden – a moment of quiet reflection that reminded everyone present of the enormous sacrifice made by so many.

Hollie was invited by Simon Louagie from Talbot House in Poperinge, a place that holds a special place in the story of the Great War. TCBC are proud corporate members of Talbot House, supporting its ongoing upkeep and restoration. The historic house served as a haven for soldiers during the Great War, offering a rare moment of comfort and humanity away from the front lines. Today, it remains a powerful symbol of peace and remembrance, welcoming visitors from around the world.

Hollie with Simon Louagie, Manager of Talbot House, and Andrew Burcher from the Talbot House Association, reflecting on the important work of preserving this historic place of remembrance.

“It was a deeply touching and meaningful evening,” said Hollie. “Standing alongside people who are committed to preserving these stories was truly humbling. The ceremony was a powerful reminder of the courage, resilience, and humanity of those who served. As we approach Remembrance Day, it felt important to pause, reflect, and remember their sacrifice.”

As Remembrance Day draws near, we’re reminded that remembrance isn’t only about looking back - it’s also about continuing to share the stories and lessons of the past with new generations. Through our continued partnership with Talbot House and our specialist Battlefields tours, TCBC is proud to play a part in ensuring that the sacrifices of the past are never forgotten.

We are grateful to Simon Louagie from Talbot House, Visit Flanders, Flanders in the UK and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission for the invitation, and for the care and dedication they continue to show in keeping the memory of the First World War alive.

Lest we forget.
