Standing 173m above sea level, Montjuïc Castle is a former military fortress offering 360-degree views, including the coastline and the Port of Barcelona. The Montjuïc Interpretation Centre allows students to explore its chequered past, which includes the 1940 execution by firing squad of Lluís Companys, the President of the Government of Catalonia, its imprisonment of opponents during the Spanish Civil War, and its Franco-commissioned Military Museum, which remained open until 2009.
In the moat, there is a sculpture dedicated to French geographer and astronomer Pierre-André Méchain, who defined the metre as a unit of measurement here at Montjuïc.
