Hveragerði

Relevant to students of Urban Issues and Challenges

Known as the "hot spring town," Hveragerði is an excellent place to study geothermal energy and its impact on local agriculture. Boiling water runs just beneath the surface of the ground, making it the world’s northernmost banana producer. Food can be cooked by simply burying it in the ground. The area’s hot springs and geothermal greenhouses demonstrate how Iceland utilises geothermal resources for sustainable living. Houses here are specially designed to withstand earthquakes, but the risk of new hot springs opening in homes still remains!
