Hellisheiði

Relevant to students of The Challenge of Resource Management, The Challenge of Natural Hazards
Home to one of the largest geothermal power plants in Iceland, Hellisheiði offers a unique opportunity to learn about renewable energy sources. Students can explore how geothermal energy is harnessed and its importance in Iceland’s energy provision. A major carbon capture and storage (CCS) project, Orca, began operating at the Hellisheiði geothermal power plant site in September 2021. It now claims to be the world’s largest carbon capture and storage facility.
